Flutter By, Butterfly!

The other morning, I stared out the kitchen window at our back yard.  I love our back yard.  I love how over the years it has become enclosed by green.  I won't try to pull the wool over your eyes... there are weeds, and plenty of them.  But, there are also little areas that we've planned out and nurtured -- like the trio of Cleveland Pear trees that we planted strategically so that we couldn't see into our neighbor's yard... long before the trees were tall enough to block anything.  These days, the healthy leaves provide a beautiful screen!

And then there were the butterfly bushes... another trio.  Two white, and one a shade of purple.  I always knew they attracted butterflies to our yard, but I never realized how much -- until this year.  You see, last winter was the last straw for our butterfly bushes.  They made no appearance this year.

... and neither did the butterflies!  I thought about the fact that it was early July, and I hadn't seen one butterfly in our yard this year!  Not one.  I made a mental note that those butterfly bushes had to be replaced.

Hours later, I stood at the same window preparing dinner, and couldn't believe my eyes!  A beautiful butterfly was fluttering around my pot of marigolds.  Marigolds are a humble flower, but one that will always be beautiful to me.  I recall styrofoam cups of marigolds each Mother's Day -- a gift that the church Sunday school department helped us prepare for our moms.  And then, as a young wife and mom, I remember planting marigolds because they were easy, and hearty, and dependable for a new gardener.

I guess I'm a little sentimental about marigolds!

Even today, they do not disappoint.  My hubby planted a big pot of them on our patio, and it was there that this fluttering beauty decided to land for a photo shoot.  I would've dead-headed the flowers for you, but I wasn't sure the butterfly would wait.  I knew you'd understand.  *wink*

Happiness is...

...getting up on time
...making lunches with love
...hugging and kissing everyone out the door
...loading the crockpot bright and early
...receiving a phone call from a dear friend who says, "Grab your camera, and check out the sunrise!"

Fall Friday Flower Fun

Over the past few weekends, I've gotten some interesting flower-shots, both downtown and around town at various garden centers.  When I run out of things to take pictures of in our yard, the garden center is a great place to head!

Have a great weekend!

Portulaca :: Moss Rose

The other morning as I did dishes, I looked out the window.  I couldn't help but notice the heavy dew on the grass and flowers.  The sun was already bright, but still low in the sky, and I decided to hurry out to snap some pictures before the shadows appeared.

These are the Portulaca (also known as Moss Rose) in the garden just beside our patio.  During this dry summer, it seemed to take forever before they took hold and made themselves at home.  Right now, they're flowering and spreading like crazy.  I love the variety of colors: shades of red, pink, coral, yellow, and even white.

Here are some dewy shots that I managed to get... God's fingerprints.

Enjoy a safe holiday weekend!

What's Up? 8.1

Morning Glories have a magical quality about them don't they?  Have you ever noticed that white center? It totally looks like there is a tiny white light bulb poking through and casting a glow, doesn't it?  Love it.

This is a busy week around here... lots going on.  Everything seems to be getting crammed into these last few weeks of summer vacation for us.  How about you?  Whatever's happening at your house, I hope you'll take a little time to slow down and enjoy God's beautiful creation.  Have a great day!

A Coca-Cola Moment

After a lovely lunch at Panera with one of my oldest and dearest friends, I was on my way home when...CRASH.  Here's how it happened.

I was sitting at a red light in a long line of traffic.  The light turned green.  Before it was my turn to start moving, I had time to take one more swig of my Coke, and before I could even put it back down.... BOOM.  Coke was down my shirt, up my nose, and in my eyes. What the heck just happened?  I put my drink down where it proceeded (no joke) to EXPLODE, as if I had just shaken it and opened it.  Coke was now everywhere.  I looked in my rear-view mirror trying to figure out what hit me, and from where.  The guy behind me got out of his vehicle, came to my window and said, "Are you OKAY?"  He then suggested that we pull into the corner gas station.

We were not hurt.  Did I say Coke was everywhere?  Yep.  My two front beverage holders were filled with it.  Please note: I did not pour it there.

His car was barely damaged.  The front grill was a little popped out.  He'll probably be able to punch that thing right back into place.

My back van door?  ...has an imprint of his grill.  Well, you know -- kinda sorta.  Big indentation.

No glass, no muss, no fuss.  Called police.  Filled out reports.  He was sited.  Aside from feeling as if I need to be hosed off (remember the Coke?), I am fine.  Life goes on.

I high-tailed it back to my side of town to pick up my son from school.  On the way... the whole thing became funny.  I sort of relived the details.  Like... it was nice that the guy came to my window and asked if I was okay.  In truth, I was traveling at a rate of ZERO mph, and so I really started to wonder at him asking.

THAT's when it became funny.  I realized how I must have looked to him.  There I sat with a stupefied look on my face wondering WHAT ON EARTH had just happened.  I had Coca-Cola in my eyes, running down my face, and (I am sure) hanging in giant drops from the tip of my nose.  Not to mention the fact that I was holding a bottle of pop that was exploding all over me and my dashboard.  I must've been a sight.

I'm not sure I'll ever feel the same way about Coca-Cola.  {Oh heck, who am I kidding?  My gram introduced me to the stuff.  I'll never be able to give it up.}

Today, I am thankful for God's provision of safety for me, as well as for the sited gentleman.  I'm thankful for an honest person that owned up to what happened, confirming my story.  Thankful that I could reach my sweet hubby, and that he was "on call" to pick up our son at school if my situation did not allow me to.  Thankful that our daughter was safe at home.  Thankful that the accident was not anything more than it was!  Oh -- and for a sense of humor.  A little sticky, but still in tact.

This one has God's fingerprints all over it.

Fingerprint Friday

God's fingerprints as we walk the early-morning trail...
Psalm 5:3 (NIV)
In the morning, O LORD,
you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before you
and wait in expectation.
