Thanksgiving on Sunday ~ The Best Thing We Ever Did

We found out early last week that our son would have to work on Thanksgiving Day.  Two jobs, spanning the day from 7AM to 10PM.  Boo.  The retail world is not my favorite thing right now.

But, I learned a long time ago [from my mom] to make the best of things.  You know -- the "when life gives you lemons" principle?  Besides, Thanksgiving is more of a state of mind that a specific DAY.

So, when my frustrated son texted me to give me the Thanksgiving news, I shot back, "I'm sorry. Maybe we can do a turkey just for us on another day.  Keep your chin up. xo"

I didn't know what day that might be, but I was determined to fulfill what I had meant as a promise.

When he came home on Saturday evening and said that he didn't have to work at all on Sunday, my brain starting weighing the options.  By Sunday after church, it hit me that TODAY WAS THE DAY.  Because of the combination of my hubby's and my son's work schedules, the only time we could all do this together was... SUNDAY.

We talked about it on the ride home from church, and after verifying all of our son's favs, we stopped at the grocery store, and stocked up for our evening meal.  After a quick lunch of leftovers, I got started.  I was on a mission, so everyone sort of left me alone.

I decided that I could make this feel like "flying by the seat of our pants," or I could make it feel like Thanksgiving.  I chose the latter.  At our house, that means a tablecloth and runner, good china, good silverware, the beautiful crystal glasses that we got as a wedding gift, and of course -- most of the standard Thanksgiving fare.

And, I am happy to say that I pulled it off.  It wasn't much by some people's standards, but... I was only looking to put a smile on my son's face.  It was a great meal, and we enjoyed it SO MUCH that we had to save the pie to put in lunches the next day!!

Thanksgiving Day will still come along tomorrow, and we won't be together -- but I've got a couple tricks up my sleeve.  I hope that the memories of our Thanksgiving on Sunday will come to mind throughout my son's workday.

I just baked our family-favorite coffee cake for breakfast.  Our son usually eats on-the-run in the morning, and this will be a special treat for him, as will the Cinnamon Applesauce salad -- a Thanksgiving tradition that I can put in his lunch tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends.  I hope you will make the best of whatever circumstances life throws at you tomorrow.

Make lemonade!

The Day After...

If you follow MY PHOTO BLOG, you've no doubt already seen my Thanksgiving photos.  People really did show up to grace that table.  I was really happy with the way it all came together -- thus all the photos, but... it was really just a representation of all that is beautiful and lovely in my life.

Those "grateful lists" that I've been making for October and November seem almost trivial now that I have had two days surrounded by those I love.  Not trivial as in I didn't really mean it.  Trivial in the sense that there's nothing like literally sitting in the the midst of and basking in the glow of everything that is good in your life. This Thanksgiving really seemed to be that.  Just stopping mid-bite and realizing that this life, these people are what it's all about for me.  Thanksgiving Day has a way of making all the stuff  fade into the background, showcasing the important... the "things" you truly could not do without.

Today?  Today is all about sleeping in.  No "Black Friday" for us.  Probably a crock pot full of chili.  Our "day after" has always been more about recovery(so to speak) than kicking off Christmas with a bang.  Christmas comes slowly around here.  That's not to say that I won't start bringing some decorations out from their resting places today -- but... no expectations, you know?  The tree waits until the first weekend in December.  That's just how we roll.

In recent years, we have learned to do what works for us rather than trying to keep up with anyone named Jones -- and most of all, to do what we do with GREAT JOY!

I hope that wherever this day finds you, that you are also living with GREAT JOY.  'Tis the season!

Little Thanksgiving Touches

I will be away from home for the rest of this week, so I've been trying to get things in order around here so that Thanksgiving week doesn't feel overwhelming for me.  My sweet hubby was out of town for two weeks, and I tried to use that time effectively, catching up on laundry, general tidying, and a little bit of Thanksgiving decorating.

Because I decorate for FALL as opposed to halloween, my seasonal vignettes carry over into the Thanksgiving season easily, and I can just add some last minute Thanksgiving touches.

You may remember THIS FILLABLE LAMP BASE PROJECT.  I thought it was time for an update.  I was happy to find some berry garland at Michael's for 80% off, and I re-filled my lamp base for a new look.

Also, if you follow me on Facebook (you DO, right??), you may have seen my post about the Tablecloth Dance. Over the years, I have had some ill-fitting tableclothes that I had finally had it with.  I decided that I would purchase a new one for this Thanksgiving, and I hit the jackpot at TJMaxx.

Well, actually... the story goes like this:

* I wasn't sure of my table's length (no wonder my other tablecloths were ill-fitting, right?), so I purchased two different lengths of a tablecloth I liked at TJMaxx
* Got home & realized BOTH were the wrong size
* Headed out later that same evening to HomeGoods on the other side of town (and where I could also hit a different TJMaxx), where I thought I might find the same brand/pattern tablecloth in the correct size
* Found a different tablecloth to "settle for" in the correct size & purchased it
* Headed over to TJMaxx to return the other "wrong size" tablecloths
* While there, spotted (under a HEAP of highly unorganized place mats) ONE tablecloth in the pattern and size that I'd really wanted.  Boom.  Happy girl!

[...and see what I mean?  A DANCE! -- or a wild goose chase, you decide.]

Plus, what I didn't tell you is that I found a pretty Ralph Lauren floral table runner on clearance.  Hello?  Really happy girl.  Totally returning that "settled for" tablecloth!

How about you?
What are you doing around the house to spruce things up for Thanksgiving?

'13 Gratefulness
* grateful for my wonderful mom, whose birthday we celebrated yesterday
* grateful for the chance I'll have to visit with four of my nieces this week
* grateful for prayer warriors
* grateful for successful heart surgery for a cousin
* grateful for my handy hubby & the car repairs he was able to do for our son

Feel free to chime in with a comment!  What are you grateful for today?

Inquiring Minds Want to Know (Survey Answers & Linky)

Before we get to the Thanksgiving traditions survey, let's do the the "gratefuls" so they don't get forgotten, and because I'm really trying to be faithful to this project, and to stay in the right frame of mind for Thanksgiving!

'13 Gratefulness
* grateful for a hard-working hubby
* grateful for a super-productive day yesterday
* grateful for my washer and dryer (it wasn't so long ago that my dryer wasn't working)
* grateful for our cozy home
* grateful that somebody got up when the alarm when off

Hello Friends.  Today is our Thanksgiving Tradition linky party -- and I told you I'd have the WELCOME mat out!  I can't wait to hear about the sights, sounds, SMELLS, and events of Thanksgiving at your house!  Here's a LINK to the original questions, and now... here's an idea of what goes on at our house.

 1. Where do we celebrate?  Thanksgiving has been ever-changing and evolving over the last several years in our family.  To try to ease some of the burden on our moms who were working so hard (and also hosted Christmas!), my hubby and I decided to have an open house for both sides of the family.  We asked everyone to bring a dish -- and it was pretty laid back.  We did that for three or four years, with different participants each year.  Then, in 2010, we had our celebration at Disney World (you can read about that HERE), and the following year, things got changed up again.  It's been a little back-and-forth since then, but this year, we are hosting again.  My mom is on-board to help me out, but Jill's family won't be with us this year.  Typically, they are with us on alternate years, and last year, they hosted.

 2. Formal or casual?  Mom, Jill and I all use our good china when we host.  However, we are not above making things easy if circumstances call for it.  We'd rather be together than have things picture-perfect.  I have an all-white embossed turkey platter and large and small covered turkey dishes that were my gram's.  See the platter in the picture below?  The all-white theme has prompted me to purchase some other all-white decorations like the pilgrims you see in that picture.

3./4. Turkey?  Yes!  We always roast it in the oven, and the little button ALWAYS pops earlier than we expect it too.  We have made many a phone call across town to say, "How soon can you get here?  We're running early."  It's kind of gotten to be a joke -- but it happens to all three of us when we host.  Does it happen to you too?

 5. Stuffing?  Yes!  I always make it outside the bird in a casserole.  Our go-to recipe is Stove Top. Years ago, we decided we wouldn't kill ourselves over the stuffing (we've never had any great family recipe), nor would we be embarrassed to say we just use Stove Top, because we all love it!

 6. Side dishes?  As a rule, our side-dishes are the same.  Mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, cinnamon applesauce salad, cranberry jelly, homemade bread (if my hubby has anything to say about it), and usually a sweet potato casserole (if Jill's family is with us).  We don't experiment with recipes for Thanksgiving dinner.  What can I say?  We already know what we like. *wink

 7. Does the host/hostess do all of the cooking?  No!  In my family, we (almost always) ALL contribute to all events in some way.

 8. Dessert?  Pumpkin and apple pies.  Always.

 9. TV?  The TV may be on during cooking time before guests arrive.  But we (meaning my hubby and I) are more interested in peeking at the parade than football.  I still love those giant balloons!  When the guests arrive, the TV goes off, and we are a FOOTBALL(TV) FREE zone!  Seriously.  [I do remember one year that Jill & her hubby hosted.  At that time, my kids were the only kiddos in the family, and Jill graciously borrowed some family videos for us to watch together after dinner -- which was kind of a big deal at the time for our kids.]

10. Serving time?  We usually serve a "late lunch" meal -- planning to sit down at 1:00.

11. Any other traditional activities through the day?  Through the years, we have done various "thankfulness exercises."  Most often, before prayer, we go around the table stating what we are thankful for.  It's typically a little emotional...  After dinner, we often read the Christmas sale ads, sometimes sharing "wish lists."  We do play games, and usually stay together until evening, when we have been known to bring out some fresh appetizers and leftovers.  (Last year, it was a GORGEOUS day, and we all went for a walk together through Jill's neighborhood!)  Occasionally some friends will stop by in the evening, and join us for games and fellowship.

12. Anything else?  Hmmmm, let's see... Well, none of us are Black Friday shoppers.  That said, there might be a thing or two that we run out for.  But we don't typically camp out on the curb at our favorite stores or anything!  If I really have my act together, I like to have enough grocery shopping done so that I don't even have to leave the house on Friday!!!  It's like a Thanksgiving gift to myself!

Okay, your turn!

Inquiring Minds Want to Know (Thanksgiving Survey)

Alright Friends, it's time for a little Thanksgiving Survey -- and I would LOVE it if you would participate on your blog.  With Halloween over, and Thanksgiving plans in full swing, it got me thinking about what our traditions are, and what they are NOT.  It's been interesting to read other bloggers' versions of Thanksgiving, and hear their ideas of traditions... the MUSTS and the MUST-NOTS.  So here we go.  Are you ready?

Consider the questions below, and create a post, answering them.  [Obviously, simple answers cover it -- but details are more interesting!]

On TUESDAY morning (Nov.12), I will do a post with my answers -- and include a list-linky, where you can add your name so that we can come to your blog to read your answers.

The questions are pretty basic, with some ideas in parenthesis to get you thinking... (Who knows, it might even get you thinking about why you do the things you do, what you should or shouldn't be doing, or how you could do things differently -- or better!) Perhaps, you'd just like to approach these questions and answer them for the years when Thanksgiving is at YOUR house.  That works too!

  1. Where do you celebrate Thanksgiving?  (Always at the same place?  Or, are you in a family rotation of hosting?  How does that all get decided?)
  2. Formal or casual?  (Good china, everyday, or paper plates?)
  3. Do you serve turkey?  (Is it prepared traditionally in the oven... or outside in a deep fryer perhaps?)
  4. If not turkey, what is your main-dish of choice?
  5. Stuffing?  (inside the bird, or out?  Secret family recipe?)
  6. Are your side-dishes the same every year, or do you change things up?
  7. Does the hostess(or host) do all of the cooking, or do all of the guests contribute?
  8. Is the dessert traditional (like pumpkin pie), or does it vary from year to year?
  9. How about the TV?  Is it on?  (Parade?  Football?)
  10. Do you eat at the lunch-hour, or dinner-hour?
  11. Do you have other things that you do during your time together?  (At the dinner table do you do any little "thankfulness exercises?" -- and by that, I don't mean tummy crunches - LOL.  Do you play games after dinner, or enjoy some other family activity?)
  12. What else do you want us to know about your special traditions?  DO TELL!

Okay -- happy answering!  I'll see you on Tuesday for our Linky Party.  Come along & tell your friends, too!  Who knows?  Maybe we'll all get some new and creative ideas for Thanksgiving.  Don't be shy about showing up late to the party.  The welcome mat will be out!

Oh -- and if you don't have a blog, feel free to visit on Tuesday, and leave a comment about some of your favorite traditions!!!  [Facebook comments also encouraged!] -- or just show up and get ideas from other party guests.

Also... here's that blog button that I never use. (LOL)
Feel free to add it to your post to link back to our party!

Thanksgiving 11.20

Today, I am thankful for:
1. a good (early) morning before the kids went to school.  Even though my girl felt achy, it was manageable because she knows she's on the mend
2. another afternoon for my girl to stay after school to catch up on some missed classwork
3. creative time today

Thought(s): (source)

*Be thankful for the difficult times.  During those times you grow.
*Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities for improvement.
*Be thankful for your mistakes.  They will teach you valuable lessons.

*It's easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.
*Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they can become your blessings.

Thanksgiving 11.19

Everything is not always what it seems.  My girl missed four days of school last week because of extreme nausea. We assumed she had the flu.  (There were stories flying around school about who had what ailment, and what teachers went home sick...)  However, my girl had no fever, there was no vomiting, and she had a great appetite. HUH?  We were so exasperated.  Nothing was making sense.  Until...

My sweet hubby called our brother-in-law, who is a massage therapist.  It sounded to him as if she had a pinched nerve in her lower back, resulting in back pain -- and yes, nausea.  I took my daughter to get a massage tonight, and she left a new girl -- well, almost.  She definitely left a "changed" girl.  What a relief to this mama!

Today, I am thankful for...
1. a sweet brother-in-law who helped my daughter solve her back pain problem: two pinched nerves!
2. finding a new backpack style that will be more effective for my daughter with her back issues, and is "school-approved"
3. a sweet niece to play Sponge-Bob Bingo and Halli Galli with tonight

Thought: The Lord is my strength and shield.  I trust him with all my heart.  He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy.  I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.  ~Psalm 28:7

1. My mom - today is her birthday, and we'll celebrate tomorrow
2. My sweet nephew, Noah -- his birthday was earlier in the week, but we'll celebrate today
3. The opportunity to have my family here for 2nd Sunday lunch tomorrow (yes, I know it's 3rd Sunday -- that's just how it worked out this month)

Thanksgiving 11.16

Today, I am thankful for:
1. a chance to talk with the nurse at our doctor's office about my daughter's flu?-like symptoms ("hang in there" was the conclusion we reached without an appointment)
2. an afternoon escape to Target
3. an afternoon treat -- a Starbuck's Peppermint Mocha Frappaccino, and one to share with my daughter
4. my girl feeling a little better today
5. my sweet son, who touched base with my daughter's teachers, and brought her school assignments home to her (four day's worth!)

Thought: (I Thes. 5:18)  In every thing give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Motherhood: Expect the Unexpected

This has not been the week that I expected it would be.  My daughter is on her third sick-day with flu-like symptoms, and rather than scurrying around and running the usual errands, I've just been...  here.  Sitting with her.  Standing by.  Encouraging.

I shrug off her many thank-yous and "mother-of-the-year" nominations, and think how grateful I am that I am able to be here for her.

I prayed for a job this fall, and nothing really panned out.  I thought maybe God was saying "no," but now I realize he might have been saying "wait" -- as we've had a large assortment of sick days and doctor's visits between the two kids and I.  I will gladly wait for a job if it means my girl doesn't have to stay home sick in an empty house all day.

Motherhood is my greatest calling.  I feel so blessed to be able to enjoy it as a stay-at-home-mom.

Today, I am thankful for...
1. the privilege of being a stay-at-home mom
2. a sense of humor and LAUGHTER
3. hugs, and words of appreciation
4. things that bring comfort -- a cozy blanket, a cup of peppermint tea, fuzzy socks

Thought: I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. ~G.K.Chesterton

Thanksgiving 11.14

Today, I am thankful for:
1. our vehicles (we are spoiled to have two)
2. my sweet sister, Jill, who (along with her family) is hosting our Thanksgiving this year
3. ornamental pear trees turning a beautiful golden-yellow

Thought: I used to think that faith... was sort of like a building block, and you put all these blocks together, and you build a house, sort of like the little pig built that the wolf could not blow down. And now I get older and I feel that faith is a matter of surrender.  It's a matter of just giving up, and leaving that house and just walking out and experiencing the cold and the rain and doubt and confusion and trying to keep up your hope and some sense of gratitude.  If you just keep up hope and gratitude, maybe that's... all you need. ~Garrison Keillor

Pass the Salt?

I've wanted to try this idea from Pinterest (of course) for a long time, and finally got the chance.  It was one of the first ideas I spotted and pinned on my "Crazy for Canning Jars" board.  Yes, I have one of those.

It's amazing how people are using canning jars these days.  They're not just for "canning" anymore!  They are everywhere, and for everything!

Why does salt in a canning jar make me happier than salt in a salt canister off the store shelves, you ask? Because.

There.  I said it.  *wink*

The end.

p.s.  Did you know that a Parmesan Cheese lid supposedly fits a canning jar, too?

Today, I am thankful for:
1. the morning sun that came before the rain yesterday
2. time spent on Facebook with my sister and cousin remembering our grandpa
3. LOTS of Socks for Sandy sent to Laura for Hurricane Sandy victims

Thought: He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has. ~Epictetus, Greek sage and philosopher

Inspired

On Saturday, I got to hear Sheila Walsh speak.  What an honor.  She is such a sweet woman of God with such a tender heart, and I always go away from her conferences feeling so extra-specially loved by God.  During this talk, she shared that she has committed Psalm 143:8 to memory, and every morning when she wakes up (before she even gets out of bed) she says this verse back to the Lord.  Inspiring, yes?

Speaking of inspiration, I continue to be so inspired by Laura and the SOCKS FOR SANDY campaign that she started.  She has collected LOTS of packages to pass along to the victims (check out the photo of her loaded van, below).  The shipment that Laura received on Friday filled two giant mail bins!!!  Exciting!  She's doing a great job of keeping everyone updated too!  You can check out The Official Socks for Sandy Facebook page for all of the latest!

The latest news is that hats, gloves, and mittens are no longer a need.  Socks ARE still needed, and the latest request is for new packages of underwear.  EVERY SIZE is needed!

Click HERE to get to Laura's blog where she puts all the FAQ's & updates.

Today, I am thankful for:
1. people who inspire us to do better
2. those who have served or are currently serving in our military -- and for their selfless sacrifice on my behalf.

1. words of truth spoken by Sheila Walsh -- that The Shepherd knows where to find us, [no matter how broken we are, and no matter what we might be hiding behind]
2. the delicious dinner that I came home to last night -- prepared by my sweet hubby and daughter

Today, I am thankful for...
1. a day in Amish country yesterday with my hubby
2. a chance for our daughter to spend time with a friend that she doesn't get to see often enough
3. the anticipation of the holiday season
