Two Blogs and a Bromeliad

(and not necessarily in that order)

My sweet hubby brought this orphan plant home to me the other day.  The only information included was a label on the bottom that said "Komen Bromeliad."

I never thought about it being related to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, but apparently that's exactly what it is.  He bought it at Lowe's, and it's in exactly the pot(pink) that is pictured on their site.  Glad that we could support the commitment for a cure!

In the meantime, this Bromeliad is sitting on my kitchen counter, and because I am unfamiliar with this family of plants, I don't know what to think it will do next.  It almost looks like something purple wants to bust out of the odd greeny-pinkness.  I swear, it's become even more PINK since hubby brought it home (or could that just be my eternal optimism?)

I don't know much about this plant except that it likes sun.  Think I'll put it over in the "tropical plants" section...

I DO have sun in my kitchen.

Well, usually.

Oh December.

Actually, I'm thankful that we are setting rainfall totals rather than snowfall totals.  (NOTE TO SELF: Go write that down on One Thousand Gifts list.  No joke.)

And speaking of eternal optimism (were you paying attention?)...

Have you ever been to Aunt Ruthie's Sugar Pie Farmhouse?  Oh my.  You've got to go.  You will feel loved and cared for and fussed over just like you were sitting in her kitchen live and in person (I think).  At least -- that's the way I always feel after I spend some time there. Right now, she's all decorated for Christmas.  Go see!  A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

I LOVE this quote that I found there the other day.  It's related to holiday decorating:

“Festive decorations are a gift from your heart
to the hearts of those who enter your home.
They simply and sweetly say, ‘love lives here’
and ‘we were expecting you, welcome!’ ”
~Dolley Carlson (author)

And while we're talking about sweet blog hospitality, you really should stop over at Susan Branch's.  Her blog is delightfully charming.  When you click away, you'll feel like you've just had a cup of tea with an old friend in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts (I imagine, though I've never actually been there).  Susan is an artist that you may be familiar with.  If you stop over at her blog, you will recognize her work right away.

I'll send you on your way with these recommendations for now.  Happy reading!

  1. I saw that plant at Lowes and had no idea that it was linked to the Breast Cancer Foundation. It is a pretty color. I've never had one either, but I was thinking that that pointy thing in the flower and the highlight of the plant?

    1. Cathy,
Mine did nothing. Eventually, I sort of forgot about it off in a corner. It never changed ONE BIT from the day I got it. When I finally checked on it, it was a dehydrated version of it's former self... but still looked the same as the day we got it. WEIRD plant!!
